How to Design the Best Media Room

The media room isn’t just for movies! Limiting media room design to an in-home theatre experience is no longer the trend. You will see more media rooms being designed around entertaining and a shift away from the built-in seating and confined use of a cinema experience. Furniture selection and placement is paramount in a media room and designers are starting to utilize comfortable seating that is movable so the room can be used for gaming, movies, sleep-overs or play. Sleek sectionals are also making a comeback. Pictured below is a modern sectional from Town and Country Leather of Austin.

The days of family rooms are gone with the rise of modern technology! Our clients want an amazing in-home movie experience and this calls for award-winning and cutting edge tech. Top surround sound and projector screen equipment is a must have for any media room. Lighting is another key element. We like our media rooms to allow for some natural light and, if available, take advantage of views! There are ways to effectively cover the windows with automated blinds so why block off the room if there’s a view? We recently won an award in the 2015 Austin Parade of Homes for the best media room and our room had a view and a patio door leading to a gorgeous covered patio. Not something you see everyday in a media room, but we want our rooms to have a mutli-purpose use and it can be done.

As an extension to the media area, you may consider installing a dry or wet bar for food serving or prep in that area. Another popular trend is an area for pool or air hockey tables. Think party central! We are a custom home builder that walks you through each design step by discussing your living and entertaining patterns and needs. This enables us to help you design a custom home that will serve you well!

Finally, ample storage for games, food and entertainment supplies can be tricky so we suggest creating fun ways to hide your things! Creating a reading nook that opens to a storage closet or a hall closet near to the room are important details that many builders don’t consider. You may not want to invest in large storage unit furniture and can actually save on your furniture budget if you plan ahead and remember to install some storage!
