When I moved from Chicago to Austin 10 years ago I quickly learned that potted plants here don't do as well as they do up North! You must never forget to water or you'll pay!!! I've learned some tricks over the years. I have water bulbs in the soil just in case I'm leaving for the weekend or if I know I'm going to be extra busy! Not watering for a couple days can dry out the soil enough that the plants don't survive.
A solid layer of peat moss over the top of the pots will help keep precious moisture in the soil and add an extra protective barrier for the heat. My favorite plant choices that have proven heat and drought tolerant are: lantana, bougainvillea, lavender, sage and potato vines in red and light green. The colorful hanging leaves blend nicely with the upright lavender spikes and lantana provides a soft, colorful fill. Place your pots in morning sun only. If you have pots in afternoon sun I would suggest putting a timed watering system in because if you forget to water for even a few days your plants will die here in the heat of August.
Experiment with colors and types...that's what makes potting so much fun.
